Modern Entryway Nook

If you’ve ever questioned the power of paint, wait until you see how we transformed our closet into a modern style entry nook!

If you’ve been following me on Pinterest, you’ll notice that I’ve been loving ALL the black walls. When I decided to give our front closet nook a makeover, it was a no brainer as to what color would be on my roller.

We converted this closet into a sitting nook shortly after we moved into this house. It’s proved to be way more functional for us. Our guest have a spot to sit to put their shoes and boots on, and its the perfect space to pile all the things kids bring as they come and go.  We initially painted it green and had some basic black hardware. A cream and navy patterned cushion and some wire baskets rounded off the look.

After awhile, I was looking for a quick makeover and put up some removable wall paper in a blue and white trellis pattern. I also had intentions of changing the cushion cover, but that ended up not happening. So it was  clash of patterns for a while leading me to never really feeling the love for the space.

The Makeover

Thankfully, all I needed was a couple of weekends and minimal supplies to turn this nook into a more modern space! I used MDF to give it a faux ship lap look and then dove right in with the black paint. The hardest part of it all was choosing which black to go with.

I had so many paint swatches! If anyone ever tells you black is black, take them to the paint store and call their bluff. The winner was Benjamin Moores “Jet Black” which I had color matched to Home Hardware’s Beauti-tone paint in order to take advantage of their paint sale.

Initially I only painted the ship lap black and left the rest of the space white. After a few days I definitely was not feeling it and knew I needed to paint more of it black. But how far do I take it was the question? I ended up doing it all but the bottom most panel, leaving it white to match the trim.

Best decision I made ever.

I LOVE the way leaving that bottom panel white framed it out.

I found some great post hooks at Canadian Tire that are a part of their CANVAS brand. They came in a brushed brass finish and were clean and modern looking. I lucked out at Home Depot and found some brushed brass pulls by Richelieu that matched the post hooks perfectly. The hardware really warms the space up.

I would love to find some baskets to stick up on the shelf for additional storage and opted to not put the cushion back on the bench. Some new throw pillows are also on the list for this space. I’m loving the clean look of the black and white so it probably won’t be anything with too much color, but definitely something to add some warmth.

Crazy what a little paint and elbow grease can do!
