Quick & Easy Playdough

It’s a bold claim, but it’s true. This IS the best playdough you’ll make!

We’ve had a few dreary, rainy days lately and although I could lay in bed all day with a book and a hot cup of coffee, I have kids who can’t. I hate to mislead you though, I can’t actually remember the last time I lazed about like that! Read a book? What is that?

We’ve started to limit the amount of screen time that’s been happening in the house lately & with that comes chorus’ of “I’m bored” & “there’s nothing to do”. It’s as though they don’t know what a yard, or a book, or their imagination is. Are you sugar? You’ll melt in the rain? Go jump in puddles for crying out loud! The one thing that manages to keep all 3 busy for longer than a minute, is playdough.

Now there’s lots of different ways to make playdough. Some are cooked, others aren’t. I like the cooked version best, because it allows the salt to combine with the rest of the ingredients and doesn’t leave your hands feeling so dry afterwards.

What you’ll need to make your own:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup table salt
  • 2 tbsp. cream of tartar
  • 2 tbsp. of vegetable oil (I used grapeseed)
  • 2 cups of room temp water
  • Food coloring

Mix your flour, salt, & cream of tartar in a saucepan.  Add in your water and oil, mixing continuously over medium-high heat. Your mixture will start to clump, keep stirring it until it forms a ball. Remove it from the heat and place it on some parchment paper or in a mixing bowl to cool. Once it is cool to touch, kneed it until it is smooth. Divide it into portions and add your food coloring. Kneed the color in and then get creating!

We store ours in Ziploc sandwich bags, but you could also store in mason jars, or old playdough containers!
